My employer offers free life insurance and I am wanting to put my children (2 & 11) as beneficiaries. Can I do this or will it void my children because they are underage?
You can certainly add you children as beneficiaries to your life insurance, but if you do, whoever becomes legal guardian of the children if you die, will have complete control over the money, to do whatever they want with it.
Normally, that would be their other parent. If you trust their other parent with the money, then that's fine - if the other parent dies, and they get awarded to strangers, then they get complete control over the money from the life insurance.
However, you may want to discuss this with an estate planner or financial advisor to be sure how this would be handled and what your options are for beneficiaries to your employer provided life insurance.
