There are "non-med" life insurance policies that do not require a health exam, and even some life insurance policies that require an exam will exempt low face amounts and/or children from having to take one. That means, there is normally not a health exam required for children's life insurance policies, or life insurance with limits of coverage that are below $50,000, for example.
The health exam is free (paid for by the life insurance company) to the person applying for life insurance, and can be done in one's own home, office or place of one's choice (including the health exam company's office).
Usually, an exam will not take more than 20 or 30 minutes and may include you answering some health questions, having your blood pressure checked, a blood draw and mouth swab.
